Lutron Electronics Lamp Dimmer Switch, May 8, 2008

A great dimmer switch. Very simple to install an works extremely well. My wife has now used it for several months many times a day and she is very happy with the ease of use. The dimmer has very smooth and safe operation.
The only downside is that the switch emits an very low level RF signal that interferes with her radio when it is within an a few inches of the radio. The fix is simple...move the switch away from the radio.
I would highly recommend the Lutron Electronic Plug-in Lamp Dimmer Switch...great product.

it worked for me, May 27, 2011

This dimmer really did the job for me.

I purchased an old lamp at an antique store, but there were two problems with the lamp: the switch is rather hard to reach, and I don't absolutely trust the wiring... I don't want to leave it plugged in when I'm not around.

This dimmer switch was a great solution to both issues. The lamp plugs right into it. There is a long cord for the dimmer switch, so I can move the switch where I want it while leaving the light stationary. The sliding mechanism on the switch slides smoothly through the dimming cycle, but changes the friction level when it reaches the "off" position, so I know for sure when the power to the lamp is all the way off. Perfect. I can leave my lamp plugged into the switch with no worries about the old wiring.

Two other reviews struck me as a bit off, so I wanted to mention my opinion on each matter raised.
* One reviewer said that the switch has a little light, so she can find it visually when searching for it in her bed linens. The switch I received has no such light. This is actually better for me. Less power consumption, and I'm not one to misplace my switches.
* One reviewer said that you couldn't dim a lamp plugged into the switch all the way down, but that it would go half-bright or more. This is true when turning the switch on: it jumps from full-off to half-bright. But then you can dim it back down to where the lamp is barely glowing.

One other plus to mention: the switch works silently. No loud snaps when you're turning it on or off.

Hope this info has helped.

A good dimmer, mostly, December 6, 2008

This dimmer is well made, with a good feel to it.

Only issue I have is that the slider is very non-linear at low illumination levels. That is, while it is easy to adjust between half and full brightness, it is very hard to adjust between zero and quarter brightness -- which is what I want it for.

Contrary to manufacturer's information, there is no LED to help you find it in the dark.

Works great, and much cheaper alternative. Control is very well designed and easy to move gradually. Great accessory to take high end blast off the Hitachi

works great with two box fans, June 6, 2009

The product description says to not use it with a motor but it works fine running two 150 watt box fans. It is nice to be able to set the exact speed that you want on both fans at the same time. The three speeds the fans have lack the precision needed. You can set them at a super low speed so that they are very quiet but you still get some air movement.

Very Low Quality, November 7, 2011

As others have said, below the halfway mark, the dimmer doesn't really dim; it jumps around. At its lowest setting, it suddenly jumps to half power. Also, when it's supposed to be completely off, some power does leak through. I noticed this because I have a LED rope light connected to it (behind my bed's head board as a white-wall-diffused reading light) and they give off enough light to see by (like distant little stars when the dimmer is supposed to be clicked fully off. I'm actually concerned about an electrical fire.

Great dimmer, September 29, 2011

Small compact unit. Dimmer slides smoothly. Has a "full-off" position. Rubber feet on the bottom help keep the dimmer in place. No monitor light

Installation is ridiculously simple, just the dimmer plug in, then plug your lamp plug into the dimmer plug. The dimmer is sufficiently small and light you could attach it to a wall or a piece of furniture with foamy double-sided tape.

I bought two to replace a dimmer unit on an Ikea floor lamp. There are also "in-line" versions of the dimmer, so my choice was whether to buy two "in-line" dimmers, or two plug-in dimmers and two electrical plugs. Leviton 101-P 2 Wire Plug, Light Duty, Polarized, Brown I decided that plugs are easier to install, and if I ever got tired of the floor lamp, I could use the plug-in dimmers on something else.

Besides, the dimmers do not work with compact flourescent bulbs we are being forced buy (becuase incandescent bulbs are being outlawed)---so it will be an easy thing to de-install the dimmers if in a few years my antique incandescent bulbs burn out.

The dimmers come in three colors black, brown, and white, in-line or plug-in, and with or without a little red monitor light. The monitor diode doesn't use significant electricity, and makes the switch easy to find in the dark.

When you dim the lights all the way down, be sure to keep going to the "full-off" position, where you will not be using any electrictiy.

The dimmers are very helpful in extending the life of those precious high-wattage incandescent bulbs which you cannot buy anymore---if you use the dimmers. If you want full light, slide the dimmer to full light slowly (not painfully slowly, but rather a second or two), similarly when you want to turn the light off, dim slowly all the way down, and then continue to the full-off position.

GUIDE TO THE FAMILY OF DIMMERS
This white, plug-in dimmer without a monitor light is TT-300H-WH
TT means "plug in"; "in-line" dimmers are LC
300 is the maximum wattage, the same for all dimmers in the family
H means "without a monitor light", those with monitor lights are "NLH"
WH is white; black are "BL", brown are "BR"

I'm happy, October 5, 2011

This review is from: Lutron TT-300H-WH Electronics Plug-In Lamp Dimmer, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
I ordered this dimmer for a floor lamp in my college dorm room. Let me address an issue that one person brought up about ease of adjustment. The statement was something along the lines of 'it won't adjust smoothly except for the top half of the brightness scale.' Let me inform you. A standard light bulb uses a filament that has a certain amount of resistance, which varies with heat. A cold filament has a higher resistance than a hot one, so more current is required to reach the critical point where the bulb actually begins to glow. Once the bulb begins glowing (once there is heat being emitted), the resistance lowers, which means that less current is required to make the bulb glow, which means that you can lessen the current to make the bulb extremely dim, but still stay on. Thank you for reading my lengthy science for dummies speech.

Slows down our kitchen hand mixer, May 16, 2011
By
Sky to a Star
This review is from: Lutron TT-300H-WH Electronics Plug-In Lamp Dimmer, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
We got one of those $6 hand mixers from a big name retailer and, of course, the 'low' setting is fast and the fast setting could probably propel a small boat. I hate that. Everything in the bowl is flung all over the place and makes a mess. Our old mixer, which had been replaced by the new one, also had this problem. It became the candidate for finding out how to slow down the mixer. I popped the old one open and with my multimeter in hand learned quickly that the higher speeds for the mixer are done by upping the voltage with a basic transformer. Slowing it down meant lowering the voltage. Enter the dimmer.

Fun, unessential information
Modern dimmers often use a triac and if I were a betting man this product also uses a triac (other ways to lower AC voltage include a variable resistor and a variable transformer). Now I know a traic doesn't actually lower the voltage but zeros out the sine wave periodically. For something like a light bulb, which is just a resistor, that's no problem. For something like the simple motors in a kitchen mixer or a basic fan, also no problem. You would NOT want to use this on things that use DC voltage from your AC source or have more complicated electronics included.

Back to the review
Overall I like it a lot. I can move it around the house to dim lights one minute and my kitchen mixer the next. I do wish the wall-socket prongs on the dimmer were a little sturdier but it certainly works great.

Please note!
This was tested on the cheapest of all kitchen mixers. I can make no guarantees that it will work on anything else but those cheap, basic mixers (but I'm pretty sure they all work the same). Use at your own risk. This may void the warranty of the dimmer and/or the mixer or whatever other non-light-bulb thing you've attached to it.

Works great with incandescent / halogen lamps; not for motorized appliances!, February 9, 2011

This review is from: Lutron TT-300H-WH Electronics Plug-In Lamp Dimmer, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product comes up in certain searches for speed controllers for massage devices, but this is wrong. The manufacturer instructions clearly state:

"CAUTION: To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do not use to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting fixtures, motor-operated appliances, or transformer-supplied appliances."

It should not be used with massagers, but I'm happy with it in conjunction with my halogen torchiere.
