Does its job better than competitors, May 7, 2011

This review is from: Fulcrum 20014-301 3 LED Multiflex Task Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
I've reviewed over 500 books on Amazon, which means I do a lot of reading. I've also been happily married for over 30 years. To achieve both those things, I learned long ago that it is a wise idea to have a book light. It minimizes marital crankiness (i.e. "Can't you turn off the frackin' lamp? I'm trying to sleep!")

As a result I have become a connoisseur of book lights -- anything for family peace! In the last decade, I must have tried at least five of these, and most have been relegated to the back of the book pile (behind the mind-broadening classics that you and I both know I'm never going to get to). Some are clunky; they work fine on a hardcover but are useless on a paperback (or vice versa). Some wear out batteries faster than a teenager can wear out my patience.

With that history, I grabbed this task light from my Amazon Vine selection despite sexier candidates. I'm happy to report that -- so far at least -- this is a winner.

As a book light, it does the job quite well. The LEDs make it very bright, with a stem tall enough for me to direct the light appropriately (by which I mean: out of my husband's eyes). It has two levels of brightness. I can find the on-off switch without cussing; that may be a first. I haven't worn out the 3 AAA batteries yet (they aren't included by the way), but the fact that it's LED gives me some confidence about their lifetime. The task light doesn't weigh much. The clip has enough spring in it to stay firmly attached to a book. All in all: Good job.

But what made me say, "Oh cool!" is that this really is a *task* light, and not just a clip-on reading light. It sits up by itself without being at all tippy. That means it's an excellent directional light for craft projects such as quilting or woodworking. My only concern is that we're going to start to fight over who gets to use this... and I'll need to buy a second task light. That won't be a hardship; this is surprisingly inexpensive.

Can you tell I like this light? I do. I've dumped so many reading lights that I'm grateful to find one that is really up to the, um, task.

You turn to the right, you get a little bright light, you're in heaven., April 27, 2011

Mulitflex 3 LED Task Light is a very handy gadged to have.

It has three settings and a flexible metal neck so it can be directed just where the light is needed. It can clamp onto a book, a computer or even my hat so that if I'm working on unscrewing something in a dark corner this can lighten up the project.

I like it particularly because often when my wife and I go away there is only a reading light on one side of the bed. With this portable light, we can both read.

Another plus is that the light is close to the book so that it won't disturb my wife if she is sleeping beside me.

Sometimes I use my laptop and the overhead light is insufficient and now with this portable light, I can use my laptop more often.

A final advantage that I've found is that sometimes I am using my solar calculator and there isn't enought light. This portable light enables me to use the calculator in more places.

It uses three AAA batteries and is lightweight so excellent for taking on vacation.

Best booklight I have ever owned, December 14, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
I seems odd to get all excited about a booklight, but this is honestly the best booklight I have ever owned and I have gone through a lot of them, being an insomniac night reader with an early-bedtime husband.

The most excellent feature on this little light is the very high quality metal gooseneck. It will move absolutely any way that you want it to go with ZERO bounceback. In addition to moving effectively right and left and up and down, the head of the light twists equally well and stays put.

The light itself is pleasing with 3 LEDs, and covers the page nicely from mass market paperbacks on up to hard cover releases (I have used it now for both, as well as a trade paperback.) It is light enough to not bend or damage the book or be falling backwards. The non-skid pad inside the back of the clip keeps it from sliding around the book or falling sideways as so many of my lights with slip on clips do.

The only caveat that I would mention is that you have to want a light that takes standard batteries. This takes 3 AAAs, which I love as I can use rechargable batteries. They are easy to change and don't add to much weight, but does make for a larger housing than some people want in their booklights. I'll take that any day to having to dig up expensive and sometimes hard to find "watch" batteries. I have yet to need to change the batteries after three large books worth of reading thanks to the LEDs.

The light has a full and dim setting which my husband appreciates when I am reading in bed.

If you are looking for a new booklight (and want one with standard batteries) you have found it. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Feels like I've always owned this light, July 2, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
It's been a while since my last (and much-loved) book light died. I missed it but technology moves on, and it was time to find something new. This Fulcrum task light has been a welcome addition from the day it arrived.

I use it every night, usually for reading on my Kindle. The beam from three LEDs is perfectly adequate for reading and focused enough to shine just on my screen. Because it operates on three AAA batteries in the clip-on base, it has a bit of weight and bulk but it clips easily to the folded-back leather cover I keep on my Kindle; if I'm reading a paperback book, though, I clip it to the bed covers and shine it forward onto the page. The flexible neck makes it easy to aim right where I need the light.

It's also useful for other close tasks like knitting or sewing, and if I need some light in the night, it stands up well on its base and aims where I need it so I don't have to turn on the bedside lamp. I reach for it often and it's good to know that if the power goes out, I won't have to wander around in the dark looking for candles. It's certainly going to come with me when I travel, because even the most comfortable guest room doesn't always have the perfect reading light.

Once in a while a product comes along that's so right for your needs, you feel as if you must have had it forever. This Fulcrum light is one of those products. Highly recommended.

Versatile light, April 28, 2011

This review is from: Fulcrum 20014-301 3 LED Multiflex Task Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
I chose this light to attach to a monitor screen, rather than for book reading. I wouldn't use it for reading for two reasons: 1) the clip is very firm, so I was unwilling to attach it to my kindle for fear of damage and 2) I find it cumbersome on a regular book; I read quite fast and it means re-clipping every time I turn the page. However, we wanted a little additional light near our monitors so we don't have to use overhead lights. This clipped to a flat panel monitor with ease and provides just enough light. The flexible arm is good for directing the light where you want it, and it is unobtrusive.

The price is reasonable, except buyers should note that it take THREE triple A batteries. If you use the light frequently, or for long periods of time, the cost of batteries can add up. Rechargeable batteries might be a good option. Overall, a useful gadget that I am glad we got.

Amazingly adjustable, great little light, April 26, 2011

I write this now in my darkened bedroom with the Fulcrum Task Light arched over my keyboard so I can see. It really is a well-designed, amazingly agile little light with an easy-to-use clip and super flexible neck that make it readily position-able in all sorts of locations, reaching up, down or sideways. I'm so used to goose-neck lamps that have tipped over on me in bed or at my desk that this one is truly a pleasure to use. It's so light and yet flexibly stable, and I think the way it stands on its own or can be used with the clip will make it handy in all sorts of settings--motel rooms, camping out, in the car, during power outages. Another advantage is that it doesn't get hot so remains easy to use and postion. The only aspect I don't entirely love about it is that the light itself seems rather stark and white and not as nice as reading under an incandescent bulb, but this same brightness could be useful as supplemental light for certain kinds of work. All in all, a great little portable light source.

Worked fine for books but not so fine with the Kindle, April 25, 2011

This review is from: Fulcrum 20014-301 3 LED Multiflex Task Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
I tried using the Fulcrum LED Multiflex Task Light with a regular book and my gen 1 Kindle. With the book the reading light worked really well and provided plenty of light to read by. With the Kindle I lost part of the reading "page" as the screen was partially covered by the lamp attachment. Also, the Fulcrum LED reading light really "snapped" my Kindle screen hard when I tried to attach it. I flinched as I truly LOVE my Kindle and baby it whenever possible.

The other negative was the ability for my old soon-to-be senior citizen eyes to see how to install the AAA batteries (not included with the reading lamp) and I had to have my adult daughter install the batteries for me.

Overall, the lamp puts out a lot of good quality reading light. It works really well with traditional books and not-so-well with the Kindle.

Recommend with the comments given.

This is a great little reading light, and I can recommend it.

I won't spend 20 pages telling you that it lights up and it works; it is decent quality, does the job, and doesn't quickly break.

The light is too dim for these middle-aged eyes. We had a power outage and it was useful enough to navigate the house by. When we went to bed, though, and I tried to read with this light -- it was just too dim.

This makes a great portable work light because it's very bright and can be positioned very easily. It isn't quite suitable as a reading light for my use because even at the lower light setting it is still a little too much direct light for that purpose. If you need a lot of light form a small easily mountable fixture, this is a great buy.
